Schiphol airport and some information about its history

Schiphol is the main international airport of the Netherlans close to Amsterdam, just 9 km far from the capital. It is the third busiest airport in Europe for its passengers. It is very well organized. It has one large terminal divided into three large departure halls. Schiohol is the hub for the airline company KLM. There are also other important companies as Transavia and Delta Air Lines.

It is really interesting to know that Schiphol airport was born as a military airbase in 1916 and that after the destruction due to the Second World War it became the most important in the Netherlands.

If we step back in time we can remember of the accidented occured on 25 February 2009 when the Turkish Airlines Flight 1951 from Istanbul crashed on approach. The Dutch Safety Board said that the accident was caused by the radio altimeter that failed in providing the correct height above the ground.

That was a very bad event in the history of Schiphol airport. There were 128 passengers, 9 people died and others got very serious injuries.

When an airport is considered one of the busiest in the world it’s impossible that it doesn’t suffer delays.

In 2017 Schiphol airport experienced a very bad situation. A lot of flights were delayed and more than 50 cancelled. This happened because of an air-traffic control systems failure. Imagine more than 20.000 passengers waiting for their delayed or cancelled flights. It was a nightmare if you think that Schiphol airport handle around 160,000 passengers per day.

KLM experienced the majority of delays for all the day. They told the passengers that the delays and cancellations were caused by the airport. However they offered meals and accommodation. The airline company is responsible for their passengers until the get to their destinations. In this case they could’t give the money back to their passengers because it was out of their control.

Also the connections for long-haul flights were affected. The consequences were appalling.
