First direct flight from London to Perth with Qantas airline

Travelling by plane will be easier and easier. Last month there was the first direct flight from London to Perth. Flying to Australia from Britain is easier and faster without any stops. We have to thank the airline company Qantas.

First direct flight to Australia: 17 hours without breaks

The first journey was from Perth to London. It lasted 17 hours and 20 minutes. The time depends on winds. This is a mark in the history of aviation. It was the first flight to complete the 9000 miles (that is to say 14,500 km) route without stopping.

For the first flight Perth-London, Qantas reduced the capacity of the plane to 236 business, premium economy and economy seats. It has increased the leg room by an inch for the cheapest seats. Alan Joyce, the airline’s CEO, said: “Qantas has been preparing for this moment for 98 years … (since) we were founded in 1921.”

It was amazing for the passengers to be the first ones to complete this route without stopping. Maybe this is only the beginning of a new series of long-haul direct flights. The next one could be London-Sidney.

Advantages and disadvantages of travelling on a direct flight

Reaching Australia is not easy, cheap and fast but we believe in the airline companies progress.

Some people prefer travelling by plane that are not direct and stop in some airports a couple of hours or more. A lot people are afraid of flying and prefer touching the ground after a lot of hours. So, maybe in the future they will still prefer taking no direct flights to reach far destinations.

Being on a plane for 17 hours in a row is not easy but Qantas has worked with Sidney University’s Charles Perkins Centre to make the journey more pleasant for the passengers. They are trying to alleviating jet leg using optimum lighting, different cabin pressure, organizing in a better way the timings of the meals and so much more.

The professor of sleep Peter Cistulli says that physical activity is really important while travelling. Qantas is also improving sleep on its planes. These direct flights will be different from the others! The advantage of flying directly to Australia is saving time without waiting hours in an airport for the connection. Furthermore, the distance will seem shorter.

Travelling by plane from Britain to Australia: how much does it cost this direct flight?

Stepping back in time we discover that the old route to reach Australia from Britain lasted 42 days by boat. Then it lasted 4 days (seven stops) with the first planes. Looking at the cost of this long journey we can say that it was £525. Compared to the way of living of that time it was the equivalent of two and a half years of the salary of today. Today a direct flight by plane from Britain to Australia in economy costs £1095, so it is more or less affordable considering that you are reaching the other side of the world.
